    Who We Are

    Wyoming EPSCoR is a program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support researchers, students, and institutions in Wyoming by building a robust and diverse research education infrastructure in the state while supporting and facilitating pathways to STEM.

    The goals of Wyoming EPSCoR are:

    - to facilitate the building of research education infrastructure

    - to increase the diversity of participants in STEM fields

    - to administer awards from NSF EPSCoR to increase national research competitiveness     

    Our Mission

    The mission of Wyoming's Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) is to enhance research competitiveness by strengthening Wyoming’s capacity and capability to support researchers, students, and institutions.  Wyoming EPSCoR supports each group by building capacity for problem-solving and economic development, which is used to help grow the state’s robust and diverse research and education infrastructure through the implementation of innovative approaches to scientific discovery.  Wyoming EPSCoR aims to advance scientific discovery across the state, and with the two sovereign tribes, by administering awards from NSF EPSCoR, building collaborations, and engaging stakeholders across sectors, communities, nations, and residents to inform decision-making and scientific literacy. 


    The National Science Foundation (NSF) Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) supports 25 states, two territories, and one commonwealth in its efforts to build sustainable research and human infrastructure. The mission of EPSCoR is to advance excellence in science and engineering research and education in order to achieve sustainable increases in research, education, and training capacity and competitiveness that will enable EPSCoR jurisdictions to have increased engagement in areas supported by the NSF. Of all NSF EPSCoR faculty hires, 78% remain in their original jurisdictions, creating a return on investment for each jurisdiction.

    Current Research

    Microbial Ecology

    Wyoming EPSCoR received an RII Track-1 award in 2017 to study microbiomes across the state.  The research being conducted through this project aims to:

    - provide policy makers with tools to better manage natural resources

    - support a better understanding of the environmental roles of microbes and their responses to changes in precipitation, soil properties, and land use

    - discover the relationship between microbes and the overall function of Wyoming ecosystems

    Track-2 Project

    Dramatic increases in the scale and availability of data are profoundly reshaping all domains in the life sciences. This project will perform research that will develop and compete computational, statistical, and machine learning methods for multi-dimensional data to create predictive and explanatory models for the life sciences such as:

    - connecting genome to phenome

    - mechanistic modeling of species interactions and community diversity

    - time series of material and energy flux in aquatic ecosystems
